Questa di Teodoro Balma è più un’opera di buona divulgazione che non di mera erudizione storiografica, la cui impostazione risente, non poco, del clima politico – il ventennio fascista – nel quale fu concepita e scritta. Nonostante quel che possa sembrare ad un lettore poco attento, soprattutto nelle pagine finali del libro, dove l’Autore rende omaggio all’allora capo del governo – un atto dovuto onde evitare gli ostacoli della censura e non di certo per piaggeria o per un errore di valutazione –, tutto il volume è un inno alla libertà, alla strenua difesa dei propri ideali, alla tolleranza, alla dignità dell’Uomo, viste attraverso le vicende ultrasecolari e drammatiche dei Valdesi, il primo ed unico movimento di Riforma religiosa, sorto nel Medioevo e giunto sino ai nostri giorni. Le vicende e i personaggi narrati scandiscono in rapida sintesi le tappe salienti di un lungo processo di democrazia religiosa ancora in buona parte insoluto, che oggi, ampliando il discorso, non riguarda più soltanto il culto Valdese, ma ciascun credo, specialmente laddove esistono Chiese con posizioni dominanti, i cui destini si intrecciano, in un rapporto di connivenza, e talvolta si identificano col potere politico stesso. Questo avviene al tempo in cui siamo, sino al paradosso che gli abusanti di un luogo, spesso diventano gli abusati in un’altra parte di questo nostro stupido mondo.
